“The dogs ran along the flanks of the herd; the shepherds leaned on their staffs”. These lines by Gabriele D’Annunzio describe a typical scene of the Transhumance, the cyclical movement of flocks from Abruzzo to the Maremma and back through our Tiber Valley. The dog that accompanied and guarded the livestock, the human’s precious travelling companion, was the Maremmano-Abruzzese sheepdog.
Astute, extremely loyal to the human who takes care of them, but never slavish in their behaviour even though they are intimately submissive to their master, and capable of perceiving the nature of the intentions of the individuals they encounter, this incredible animal is able to implement very effective defensive behaviour to protect both their master and their master’s property, while being proverbially sweet and unthreatening with children.
The Maremmano-Abruzzese Sheepdog prefers life in the open air. Our breeding farm, as well as offering comfortable and hygienic kennels, a balanced diet, and the provision of diversified environments for the most delicate phases of development, thanks to its location in a rural area, ensures ample space in the unspoilt nature of an area subject to strict landscape conservation and the possibility for the sheepdogs to fully express their original vocation.
